Fear not, because sample-loving retro pop duo TV Girl has you covered. They’ve just released a new mixtape, entitled The Wild The Innocent The TV Shuffle, and it’s available for free over at their Bandcamp.
After yesterday’s slightly less accessible track from Baltimore fuzz-rockers Lower Dens, I’ve got a piece of pure pop for you from San Diego based duo TV Girl.
TV Girl makes some great retro pop music, relying heavily on samples from the 60s & 70s. They first made a name for themselves a few years back when they sampled Todd Rundgren’s “Hello It’s Me” on their song “If You Want It” and Warner music got all mad about it. Since then, they’ve been releasing EPs and singles free over at their bandcamp (or you can download their EPs here).
So, I could write a really self-righteous post about “best of” lists right now – about how its ridiculous that people are posting them in the beginning of December, about how everyone is rushing to be the first to put their list up – but here’s the reality: i’m putting up my best of 2011 lists now because this is the first time in a few months I’ve actually had the time to do so.
I’ve taken a break from blogging for the last few months, but I haven’t taken a break from consuming music. So for that reason – and because “best of” lists are one of my favorite parts about blogging – I’m kicking off Best of 2011 posts today! My top albums will be up later this week, and my top tracks will be up next week, but in the meantime, here are my favorite EPs of 2011.
You may have come across San Diego-based duo TV Girl last year with their song “If You Want It.” It was a catchy song that spread across the internet like wildfire. Unfortunately, they ran into a little bit of controversy because the song samples Todd Rundgren’s “Hello It’s Me.” When Warner Music found out about it, they ordered the song to be “wiped from the Internet.” A sad day for music lovers.
Well, be sad no longer, because TV Girl is back with a new EP, this one titled Benny and the Jetts. Even better, the entire four-song EP is available for free download on their facebook.
