listen: “dropla” – youth lagoon

Fans of Youth Lagoon‘s 2011 debut The Year of Hibernation will not be disappointed with the first listen from his 2013 Wondrous Bughouse, which will be released March 5th via Fat Possum. The synth-y sound and the heartfelt lyrics would certainly feel at home on his first record.
But as “Dropla” builds, Trevor Powers starts repeating, “You will never die/ You will never die” and you start to sense there’s some new themes going on. On creating the record, Powers said:
A lot of this record was influenced by a fear of mortality but embracing it at the same time. Realizing that human life is only great because it is temporary. Experimenting with ideas about dimensions. I’m not a gifted spear, so explaining things is difficult for me. But music always makes sense.
“Music always makes sense.” That’s a line I would have tattooed on my body.
Once you’ve fallen in love with “Dropla,” pre-order Wondrous Bughouse on CD, vinyl, or cassette (!!) because you know you’re going to fall in love with the whole album.
Listen for: the fade at 4:11, where the heaviness changes back into the soothing intro.
