listen: “we the common” – thao & the get down stay down

thao we the common

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down have been keeping it pretty quiet since the release of their 2009 album Know Better Learn Faster.  According to frontwomen Thao Nguyen, there’s a reason for that:

It is about wanting to be better and closer to people. I have had over a year respite from touring and recording—in this year I started really trying to be a part of the community I live in and the family I was born into.

Those themes will be explored with their new album, We the Common, will be released February 5th via Ribbon Music.  You can get a taste of the new album with the semi-title track, “We the Common (for Valerie Bolden)”.

The sound on this one is a bit more minimalist than the tracks on Know Better Learn Faster, leaning away from the electronic and towards the acoustic.  Fans of the slow build will enjoy this one, as the track builds from just Thao’s voice at the beginning to a chorus at the climax:

Lyric to Consider: “Oh how we the common do crack / We die / We die / We die until we try”

We the Common is available for pre-order via Ribbon Music.  You can also catch Thao & The Get Down Stay Down on tour this spring – check dates here.

  1. How do you find all this new music? You have so much stuff I have never heard of! I feel quite ignorant when I read your blog!

    • trust me, there’s way more good music out there than i have time to write about. glad you’re finding some new stuff!

    • were you a fan of the Thao & Mirah stuff? Because I hear traces of that in this track.
