recommenders: life size maps edition

Our latest round of recommenders coming from Brooklyn’s Life Size Maps, who have a slew of killer music for us to check out. And don’t forget, their most recent EP Excavate, which has been on repeat over here, is still available for free download over at their Bandcamp.
The recommender:
Mike McKeever – vox, electronics, vocals
The recommendation:
Micachu and the Shapes
The rationale:
“Junkyard deconstructed pop. It’s common to hear them throw together guitars, cellos, vacuum cleaners, and schizo pitch-shifted vocals, while somehow still working within the scope of the pop format.”
The recommendation:
Jerome LOL
The rationale:
“Jerome LOL has been making a series of songs that contain opposing moods: Awake/Asleep, Happy/Sad, etc. The concept is direct and well executed, sometimes sounding like Zelda, a beach rave, or space travel. He even throws in AIM sound effects as bizarre nostalgia triggers.“
The recommendation:
Earthbound Soundtrack
The rationale:
“Earthbound is a Super Nintendo game from 1995. There’s one part where you go into your own subconscious and 8bit shoegaze creeps in.“
The recommendation:
Melt-Banana
The rationale:
“They manage to outdo every other noise punk band in terms of speed and alien effects. Plus, their guitarist wears a surgical mask at all times.“
The recommendation:
Gatekeeper
The rationale:
“Machinelike, dark, industrial. Also, the video speaks for itself.“
The recommender:
Matt Gaffney – drums
The recommendation:
Leapling
The rationale:
“The best new band….Leapling. Lets start off by saying that these may be the coolest group of dudes you know. Their music reflects their personalities. The tune “17″ is cheerful, melodic, and groovy. When and if you get a chance to see these guys live, pay attention to everything they are doing. Musicianship at its FINEST! There is really no band I can think of that “sounds” like them. I believe that’s good thing”
