listen: joanna newsom

It’s fall!!

I’m excited. In texas we don’t have what others refer to as ‘seasons.’ We have very degrees of hot and then sometimes we have a week of nice weather and then maybe some rain. Though we’ve been in drought conditions for like 12 years now so we really don’t even get the rain anymore.

Whatever! The point here is that it is a beautiful day outside. Like 55 degrees and high today of only 81 degrees. That’s some pretty sweet weather!

When the weather changes, the most important thing is to know what to wear. But the SECOND most important thing is to know what to listen to. And Milk Eyed Mender is a fall classic.

I’m not going to rehash the record but you should know it is beautiful and ethereal and not for everyone.

If you it is for you, you LOVE it but if it’s not for you, you HATE it. Very little middle ground was present when this record came out.

Anyway “Sadie” was my original favorite song and then it moved to “Peach, Plum, Pear” but with fall settling in this year my go to song seems to be this one:

It’s just full of beautiful sweetness. Also check out the live version from the Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP. That tour was phenomenal. Joanna Newsom playing Ys live is one of my top 3 shows of all time…

I love Ys better than Milk Eyed Mender but it’s so nice outside, let’s not fight. However, when I want to hear Ys I actually listen to her live show from Bottletree. IF YOU ARE A FAN YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THIS. Unless of course you already have it. In which case, bravo!

Dan Sharber is a Joanna Newsom super fan yet he almost never listens to Have One On Me. I guess he isn’t the fan he thinks he is…

  1. I have unrequited love for Joanna Newsom and Milk Eyed Mender is one of my favorite albums ever. I get goosebumps everytime I listen to Crab, Clam, Cockle, Cowrie. And everytime I hear Sadie, I think of my best dog pal Prince who passed away 3 years ago and hurt a little inside.

Two other facts – I love Milk Eyed Mender more than Ys (!!) and the very first time I heard Joanna Newsom sing (Peach Plum Pear), I giggled out loud for like 5 minutes (I got over it obviously).

    • i know what you mean. and i think you are more common in your love for milk eyed mender than i am in my love for ys. i think it is because, i would bet, you loved milk eyed mender right away when it came out. for me, i thought it was terrible. i couldn’t take her voice and found the whole thing unlistenable. i am of course ashamed to admit all that. but then when ys came out i was blown away. i listened to it every day for a good year or so. after that i came back to milk eyed mender and of course think it’s a masterpiece. but i’ll always point to ys as my favorite and maybe that it because it was ys that won me over to the rest of her catalog… i prefer peach plum pear live from the ys tour (see the version at bottletree that i linked to) versus the weirder version on the record. it’s a great song but also perhaps giggle worthy in parts… ;)
