take cover: talking heads x buxton

In any music scene, cover bands are usually a source of derision. And I think most of the time that’s completely accurate. Making music should be about creating something new, not recreating someone else’s sound.
But, as you may know, I feel completely differently about bands doing the occasional cover song. Part of what makes cover songs so great is that the bands always seem to be having an amazing time doing the cover, and that enthusiasm transmits to the crowd.
I got to experience that feeling recently when Buxton, who I wrote about a few weeks ago, closed their set with a cover of the Talking Heads’s “Psycho Killer”.
In terms of crowd singalongs, lyrics like “fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa” is pretty much guaranteed to get people involved. And this video does a great job of capturing the moment, where everyone, from the bass player to the crazy dancers in the front, are having a killer time:
Watch for: guitarist Jason Willis shredding it at 3:34. (Is it still a cliche if it’s true?)
If you happen to be in the Houston area on August 24th, you can watch Buxton do a full set as Talking Heads at the Continental Club. They’ve also got a ton of tour dates coming up this fall, where they’ll be doing full sets as Buxton. Though maybe if you ask nicely, they’ll do “Psycho Killer” for you, too.
take cover is an occasional feature where favorite bands cover other favorite bands.
