put on your headphones: “exercise #3 (building)” – cfcf

How do y’all go about  finding new music?  When I’m in the right mood for it, I love to pull up a bunch of tracks I’m interested in, put on some headphones, and browse around the Internet while I wait for something I hear to strike me.

Granted, this probably isn’t the best method.  It’s certainly not the close, careful examination that many pieces of music deserve.  But it does work well in one way: when something does grab my attention away from Facebook or The Hairpin, it usually means it’s amazing.

Today, that was the track “Exercise #3 (Building)” from Montreal-based electronic artist CFCF.  The inclusion of the word “building” in the title fits, as the track has a slow, beautiful build over its three minutes.   There’s no lyrics here, which would normally be a problem for me.  But in this case, any lyrics would take away from the sonic atmosphere being created by CFCF’s piano & synth.  The combination is a delicate one, and you really need to hear to it through headphones to appreciate everything that’s going on.

Listen for: how the song begins to slowly fade away around the three-minute mark.

The song is from CFCF’s EP Exercises, which is out now via Paper Bag Records.  You can also see the Adam Beck-directed video for the track below:
